Frequently
Asked
Questions
about
Laser
Hair
Removal |
|
How
many
treatments
will
I
need
to
attain
satisfactory
hair
removal? |
|
The
laser
works
by
disabling
hairs
that
are
in
their
active
growth
cycle
at
the
time
of
|
|
treatments.
Since
individual
hairs
enter
their
growth
cycle
at
different
times, |
|
additional
treatments
are
necessary
to
disable
all
of
the
follicles
at a
given
area.
Most
patients
will
require
4-6
light
treatments
to a
specific
area
for
long
term |
|
hair
removal
depending
on
individual
hair
growth
cycles. |
|
The
period
of
hairlessness
between
treatments
will
lengthen
after
the
second |
|
treatment.
Your
physician
will
work
with
you
to
develop
the
optimal
treatment
|
|
strategy. |
| |
|
What
areas
can
be
treated
with
laser
hair
removal? |
|
Our
laser
removes
unwanted
hair
from
the
legs,
arms,
back,
shoulders,
underarms,
|
|
upper
lip,
chin
and
bikini
area. |
| |
|
Is
the
treatment
painful? |
|
Most
patients
describe
the
treatment
as a
series
of
slight
pin
prick
to
the
skin
or
like
|
|
a
rubber band
snapping
the
skin. |
| |
|
How
does
the
laser
work? |
|
The
laser
emits
a
gentle
beam
of
energy
that
passes
through
the
skin
to
the
hair
|
|
follicle.
The
energy
is
then
transformed
into
heat
which
damages
the
follicle.
The
laser
used
at
this
facility
has TKS
which
is a
technology
which
makes
it
possible |
|
for
laser
energy
to
“select”only
hair
follicle,
while
sparing
surrounding |
|
skin
from
damage. |
| |
|
How
frequent
will
treatment
be
performed?
|
|
Treatment
will
be
performed
4-6
weeks
apart. |
| |
|
How
long
will
the
effects
last? |
|
This
technique
of
hair
removal
is
relatively
new,
and
no
one
can
say
exactly
how
long
|
|
the
effects will
last.
Current
studies
extend
only
to
two
years
with
excellent
results. |
| |
|
How
do I
take
care
of
the
treated
areas? |
|
Following
treatment,
ice
compresses
may
be
applied
to
the
treated
area
every
3-4
|
|
hours
for
15-20
minutes,
if
needed.
An
over-the-counter
Hydrocortisone
cream |
|
or
ointment
may
be
applied
for
the
first
few
days
to
hasten
disappearance |
|
of
redness.
While
redness
is
common
following
the
treatment,
it
usually
disappears
|
|
within
a
few
hours.
If
blistering
occurs,
over-the-counter
Polysporin
or
Neosporin
|
|
may
be
used. |
| |
|
When
may
I
use
makeup? |
|
Makeup
can
be
applied
after
24
hours
if
no
blistering
is
present.
Treated
areas
are
|
|
very
delicate
and
care
should
be
taken
when
applying
and
removing
makeup
to
the
|
|
sensitive treated
area(s). |
| |
|
How
long
do I
have
to
avoid
sun? |
|
Sun
protection
is
absolutely
necessary
one
month
(4-5
full
weeks)
prior
to
your
laser
|
|
treatment. Any
degree
of
sun
tan
will
predispose
you
to
blister
formation
and
|
|
pigmentary
changes.
We
recommend
that
you
avoid
the
sun
and
wear
a
broad
|
|
brimmed
hat.
A
sunscreen
of
at
least
SPF
30
should
be
applied
every
2
hours |
|
(more
often
if
perspiring)
to
protect
against
UVA
and
UVB
rays. |
|
Exposure
to
sun
or
tanning
will
result
in
the
inability
|
|
to
perform
the
next
laser
treatment. |
| |
|
What
are
the
possible
risks
of
the
procedure? |
|
Fortunately,
side
effects
are
uncommon
when
the
procedure
is
performed
by a
|
|
qualified,
experienced
laser
technician.
However,
in
rare
instances,
complications |
|
may
occur. Darkening
(hyper-pigmentation)
may
occur,
especially
in
patients
with
|
|
darker
skin
tones.
In
other
patients,
skin
lightening
(hypo-pigmentation) |
|
may
occur.
These
changes
in
color
usually
tend
to
fade
away
gradually,
but
may
be
|
|
permanent.
There
is a
small
chance
of
scarring
(less
than
1%),
appearing
as
either |
|
thickened
or
depressed
areas.
Blistering
may
also
occur
if
there
has
been
previous |
|
tanning.
To
minimize
the
chances
of
these
possible
risks,
it
is
important |
|
to
follow
all
post-operative
instructions
care
fully.
