SPIDER & VARICOSE  VEINS

SCLEROTHERAPY

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a technique used to treat spider veins and varicose veins.  This is accomplished by injecting a sclerosing agent into the vein through a tiny needle.

What are spider and varicose veins?
Spider veins are formed by the dilation of blood vessels which are close to the surface of
the skin.  They are most commonly found on the legs and face.
Varicose veins are enlarged blood vessels caused by the weakening of valves or vein walls
Varicose veins are located deeper than spider veins.

What causes spider and varicose veins?
Pregnancy, prolonged standing, and heredity are the primary causes of varicose and spider
veins.

How does Sclerotherapy work?
Treatment can last from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the number of veins treated during
a session.  Discomfort is minimal, and no anesthesia is required.  Upon injection of the
sclerosing agent, the solution replaces the blood in the vein causing irritation and corrosion
to the walls of the vessels.  Through the natural healing process of the body, the vein
begins to decompose, shrink and eventually disappear.  Nearby vessels then begin the
work of carrying blood.  The improvement will be gradual.  Many patients experience
60% to 80% of the treated vessels resolved.  Although the vessel in question is
resolved, this does not prevent other spider or varicose veins from forming.

What are the side effects?
Most often, you will be able to resume regular activities immediately.  Excessive standing
and vigorous activities are not advised for 24 to 48 hours.  Support hose or snug
wrappings may be recommended.  Following treatment, the area will appear darkened
and/or bruised but this is temporary and will fade over time.

Who is a candidate?
The physician or his/her staff will determine if you are a candidate.  This will require a
consultation visit during which your medical history will be reviewed and the vessels in
question will be examined.  A treatment plan will then be decided upon for best results.
Several treatments may be required to achieve the optimum results.  Schedule your
consultation today and see how this procedure can make a difference for you.
